All right, on to camp and siblings...

Every day at assembly this summer, the same thing happened.

Noah and Quinn, a brother and sister here at camp, 13 and 11, would hold hands and walk around together. They were just walking and checking in.

Then they'd go the whole rest of the day without seeing each other. And that was just enough.

A few weeks ago, in my list of things I love about K&E, I said the sibling thing was my new favorite and that I had a story coming. This is it.

To put it simply:

I think we might be the best camp in the world for becoming real friends with your sibling.

I don't know if it's because of camp or just the families that come here, but this is the kind of camp where brothers and sisters actually get along with each other during the summer.

And they get along at home too.

We hear it from staff all the time, people who were campers here themselves and came back. They got along with their siblings at camp. They still do.

A Shared Language

Each kid comes to camp and creates a shared language, a kind of childhood lore that's special for just the two of them. Friends at home don't really get it. Parents only sort of get it.

And at the same time, each kid lives their whole own summer life. Their own friends, their own activities, their own stories. So when they do find each other during the day, it's because they want to.

One of those returned campers on staff put the deeper part into words better than I can. At home, brothers and sisters share an audience: their parents. Even in the happiest houses, there's a little competing for attention going on. At camp, that audience is gone for six weeks. What replaces it is just wanting everyone to like your sibling.

They take care of each other.

That's not a knock on home, by the way. That's just most siblings, most of the year.

Never Embarrassing

At school, it can be embarrassing to have your little sibling around. Camp is the total opposite.

Everyone is excited to meet the little brother or the older sister (or the older brother or the younger sister). The older kids' friends love knowing the little sibling, taking care of them, and bringing them into the camp experience.

You earn so much credibility at camp by being connected to younger kids. And the easiest way to be connected to younger kids is if it's somebody's sibling.

It doesn't matter how cool the older kids are. They always make sure the little sibling has a special place here and knows they're welcome.

Room For One More

So here's my ask, and it's a direct one.

If your kid is at camp and their brother or sister isn't yet, this is the piece of camp they're both missing.

Registration for Summer 2027 is open, and November 1st is the deadline to grab the K&E long sleeve T's and the rest of the Year of K&E Gear.

And for younger siblings and first-timers, you can start with three weeks.

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships Sometimes I wonder if we're getting this right. I mean, not really, I know we're getting it right. But it's not like there's a report card for camps, or a panel of camp judges showing up in August to score how we did overall. We put a lot of thought into how summer is structured. What the days look like, what kids leave with, whether all of it adds up. And then a big part of the job is trusting it's the best way to run...

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships 3 minutes. 3 hours. 3 days. 3 weeks. 3 months. 3 years. 3 decades. Playing a little fast and loose with timelines, but that seems pretty close to what the independence milestones look like for a kid growing up. A camp friend passed these timelines on to me, and I thought they tracked. Let's break them down. 3 minutes is the first time you feel comfortable leaving your kid out of your sight (maybe in a crib, or a playpen...
