Not next summer, this summer

Summer Matters

Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships

"Is this the summer I'm going to sleepaway?”

Last week, we had a call for families who are coming to camp this summer. There was this pretty awesome, nervous-but-excited energy.

I’m talking about the parents, not the kids. Yeah, parents, maybe even more than the kids, get those vibes going. So we have these calls where we get together, answer questions, put some faces to names, say hello before June gets here.

That quote from above was from one parent whose son has been asking a version of that question for years.

"Is this the summer I'm going to sleepaway?”

She was proud to report to him (and to us) that she told him, “I’m so excited to be able to say yes, and you're going soon, rather than next summer.”

Here for all of it. There’s something about being at the end of a countdown, of asking summer after summer and finally having this be the one where it’s happening.

And speaking of countdowns, what was also clear on that call was just how the excitement was building for those getting ready to come to camp.

A countdown had started among some, literally crossing off the days until summer. Are there some nerves in there? Sure, we all have them. But the reality is that nervous energy is mostly just waiting for fun to resolve itself.

41-days can seem like a lot or a little. 406 days would seem like more. Because that’s the difference in coming this summer or next summer.

It’s weird to put it like that, but it’s the reality.

So what happens in those 41 days?

On our end, a lot. Docks going in. Schedules getting locked. Staff orientation about to kick off. Food shipments starting to show up. There's a small army of people whose entire job for the next month and a half is making sure the summer your kid is about to have is the one we say it's going to be.

On your end, more than you might think.

A few parents on the call had already met other families at our new camper event the weekend before. They were planning to get together again that weekend.

Kids who hadn't met each other are texting. One mom said her daughter, who's "very reserved" and doesn't get excited about much, hasn't been this excited about anything in a long time.

The bus is technically the first day. But for the families who said yes, the countdown starts now. Group chats. Kitchen tables. Kids planning out what they want to bring.

And the great news is, there’s still time to step into this. To have that same feeling of “Is this the summer?..

If you’ve been thinking about this summer, this is the time. If you know a kid who is about to spend most of July and August on a couch? Send them our way.

So many families come because someone they trust mention camp at a barbecue or outing.

We have a few spots left across both camps. Hit reply and let's talk. If you know somebody who should be hearing about this, tell them

Is this the summer I’m going to sleepaway? The answer should be a resounding, “Yes!”

You got this,

Jack
