Do you know what these words mean?

Summer Matters

Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships

Going to give you a list of words. Read it quick. Be honest about how many you actually know the meaning of:

  • Bet
  • Sus
  • Mid
  • NPC
  • Slay
  • Rizz
  • Delulu
  • No cap
  • It’s giving…
  • Touch grass

How’d you do? Maybe 6 or 7? (That last one thrown in there for good measure).

Your kids definitely know these, ask them. You might have heard them yourself out in the wild.

I learned this week, it’s millennial coded to use punctuation in text. Who knew?

And I’m sure you’ve heard all kinds of other kid-speak that fall into the same category without actually knowing the definitions.

This is a big part of being an adult. Being just a little out of touch.

But there’s good news here. You know who knows these words and can use them perfectly in sentences and in their own vocabulary?

Camp staff.

One of the unique things about camp staff is they’re this group of very late teens, early twenties adults who happen to be incredibly responsible adults while also being not-so-far-removed from being kids themselves.

And it turns out being able to speak this language matters a ton.

Because where else can kids find a group of young adults who not only get them, but are also genuinely invested in their well-being? Short answer: not many places.

Most young adults your kids interact with are busy with their own lives. Older siblings have their own friends. College-age cousins see them once a year. Random staff at after-school programs are clocking in and out.

Camp staff are different. They chose this.

They’re seeing your kids every day, eating meals together, leading activities, celebrating wins and working through the occasional conflict. Actually caring.

They’re the best possible version of young adults who understand kids and are invested in helping them grow.

Where else do kids get access to people who genuinely understand them, care about them, and they can learn from in positive ways? The list is darn short. Camp is uniquely positioned to deliver all three.

The kinds of conversations your kids are going to have this summer likely won’t change all that much from the conversations they’re having in their daily lives with friends right now.

With one big distinction.

For 6.5 weeks there’s going to be this other group around who know all of this language and more. The cultural references. The zeitgeist. The whatever.

And they’re going to care. And that matters.

By the way, here’s what those words mean (filtered through a 15-year-old):

  • Bet – Agreement or “okay.”
  • Sus – Suspicious or shady.
  • Mid – Mediocre or overrated.
  • NPC – Someone acting generic or robotic.
  • Slay – Doing something really well or looking great.
  • Rizz – Charisma or flirting skill. (“He’s got rizz.”)
  • Delulu – Being delusional
  • No cap – No lie / for real.
  • It’s giving… – Describing a vibe. (“It’s giving main character.”)
  • Touch grass – Go outside and reconnect with reality.

You got this,

Jack

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships Last week, two K&E counselors threw me in the lake. I was “dressed up” in a sport jacket and everything. Though, in fairness, I had it coming. I’d just been convicted, in front of about eighty people, for the “murder” of our operations director, who was very much alive an hour earlier. This was Staff Training night 1, maybe two hours in. So far, so good. Earlier that night We had gathered everyone over at the freshman...

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships Just doing a little back-of-the-dining-hall-napkin math on this. But the numbers seem right to me. 6.5 Weeks (46 days) 12 Hours a day (rounding down) 552 Total Hours Outside That's what a summer here looks like. Man, that's an impressive number. Could spend time talking about all the benefits of sunshine, and fresh air, and running around, and all of that. The stats are easy to find, easier to list, and would make my point...

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships A few weeks ago, Jordan Cohen (unit leader) called me out of the blue. He’d been thinking about it for a while and had the whole thing worked out by the time we got on the phone. Cole, his cousin, was already signed up to run it with him, had a name for it, and both knew what mornings would actually look like. Fitness First. First period of the day for some Kenwood boys, run by the two of them. The format will move around...
