Summer Matters

Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships

Just doing a little back-of-the-dining-hall-napkin math on this. But the numbers seem right to me.

6.5 Weeks (46 days)

12 Hours a day (rounding down)

552 Total Hours Outside

That's what a summer here looks like. Man, that's an impressive number.

Could spend time talking about all the benefits of sunshine, and fresh air, and running around, and all of that. The stats are easy to find, easier to list, and would make my point for me.

But they really aren't needed.

In the end, I think everyone here agrees Outside = Good.

Staying inside is easy. And don’t get me wrong. There are tons of reasons I love the inside. AC and watching Netflix and all of that.

But there's a wild stat floating around out there. The average kid spends less than an hour outside a day. Closer to 50 minutes.

It's just hard to find this much outside time anywhere else. The school year is mostly indoors. The afternoons come in shorter chunks. The great indoors has its pull.

We're 8 days from camp officially starting. Right now, we’re all over the property in staff training. There’s an energy. Some of it is because camp is right around the corner. But honestly, I think a big part of it is just having an excuse to be outside, a lot. Walking around, sitting by the lake, out in the Hollow, sunshine.

Being outside with people who chose this, chose Outside (capital “O”) as part of the game. Throwing frisbees, hack-sacking (it’s so back! 90s ftw!), pickleball, chilling around the waterfront, running every morning.

The 552 hours is the kids' math. The staff are signing up for the same kind of summer themselves. By choice.

Most of the day is outside, by design. The walking, sports, lake, free play, grilling, all of it. The day moves people through it. Twelve hours adds up fast when it's just how the day works.

Camp starts in about eight days. I'll be out there. So will the rest of them.

552 hours total.

Did I get the math right?

You got this,

Jack

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships A few weeks ago, Jordan Cohen (unit leader) called me out of the blue. He’d been thinking about it for a while and had the whole thing worked out by the time we got on the phone. Cole, his cousin, was already signed up to run it with him, had a name for it, and both knew what mornings would actually look like. Fitness First. First period of the day for some Kenwood boys, run by the two of them. The format will move around...

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships Dr. Schott and Pam Schott had no idea what a playdate was. I mean, maybe they could have defined it if given some context. But it just wasn’t a thing. This was Rochester, New York, in the 90s. Dr. Schott (always Dr. Schott) had one cure for almost everything that sounded like a complaint: get outside and blow the stink off. That was the operating principle in the house. We were just kids. We went outside and came back later....

Summer Matters Inspiring confident, kind kids & forever friendships Did you have sponge brain at camp? It's a good thing! If so, the quickest and easiest way ever to help K&E is to take 30 seconds and write a Google Review 5 stars is great. A quick comment is incredible. A photo of you at camp is like winning rope burn. You make coffee this morning? I know I did. Gearing up for camp means making a lot of pots. Same way as yesterday and the day before. While it brewed, my head was somewhere...
